In an endeavor to construct an alphabetical listing of the burials and monuments in Delphos St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church Cemeteries, we have compiled an index with the aid of cemetery records, funeral home records, church records, cemetery ledger of burials, newspaper obituaries, death certificates, and actual monument readings. The St. John cemetery (SJC), the old section of St. John cemetery (OLD), and the Resurrection cemetery (RES) are all combined in a single alphabetical index. We hope this index will serve as an aid in genealogical research but it should not be considered as an authentic source. We cannot guarantee the accuracy of this large project because of the discrepancies between the sources.

The OLD cemetery is located just east of St. John’s Church behind the former New Delphos Manufacturing Company and ends at the first drive east of the First Street entrance. The SJC cemetery is all sections beyond this first drive. The Resurrection (RES) cemetery is located on Lincoln Highway and Defiance Trail. This cemetery was designed in 1973 and had only flat ground level monuments.  In 2003 one section of this cemetery was designated for upright monuments.

Since many of the old monuments are missing or are unreadable, we have also included in the index the deaths that were recorded in the Church records that we did not find listed in any other source. They are listed as SJ? in the cemetery (CEM) column. Most of these people were members of Delphos St. John’s Parish and the majority of them were probably buried in this cemetery. These people could be on a monument under a different name or with different dates but we were unable to make a definite connection. We feel it is better to have someone in the index twice rather than miss someone.

Early church records and some old monuments do not list a birth date but show the age at time of death. This is listed in the born column unless a date of birth was found in another source. However, the age shown at time of death in the church records and the date of birth from another source do not always match. A city in parenthesis following a person’s name indicates that person died in that city and was brought here for burial in St. John’s Cemetery. Living people who have monuments are also included in the index.

We found many discrepancies in spelling of names and birth and death dates between the various sources. However, some handwritten records and the older monuments were very difficult to decipher and may have been interpreted wrong. We did verify that a few death dates are incorrect on the monument, but we were unable to resolve a discrepancy on a birth date. Some death dates were also one or two days different between the sources. Many of the old monuments are broken or are unreadable.

This index with additional information and sources can also be found at the Delphos Public Library and the Fort Wayne, Indiana Allen County Library. The book is titled "First 150 Years St. John The Evangelist Catholic Church Death & Cemetery Records 1844-1994".
