This index is meant to help those who are working on genealogy. We have compiled this information from the Church Death Records, the Church Burial Records, Cemetery Ledger (1940-1994), Cemetery Readings done in March 1995, Newspaper Obituaries, and Kolkmeyer and Harter Funeral Home Records. There have been differences in information between sources, so can not guarantee all information is accurate. We have tried to be as accurate as possible.

St. John the Baptist cemetery is located just south of the church. It is divided into the old and new cemetery by a drive through the middle running north and south. The old cemetery is divided into three sections (A, 1A, 2A). The new cemetery is divided into eight sections (B, C, D, E, F, G, H, X). A layout of the cemetery is included in the following pages, along with a layout of each section. There are no graves in section H at this time.

On October 6, 1876, the pastor's residence and all its contents were destroyed by fire, destroying all death records from 1866 to 1876, so these records start in 1877. All deaths before 1877 are listed from monument readings of March 1995 and reconstructed burial records done from monument readings by Rita Suever and "Booty" Youngpeter in the 1970’s.

Any persons listed as "no stone" in the section column, have no source saying they were buried at St. John’s cemetery, but at least one source say the services were held at the church. There are many graves in the old cemetery that have no stones or unreadable stones, so they may be buried in one of these graves. It is sad that this history is lost. Living people are listed if they have a monument already placed on their grave lot.

We have tried to be as accurate as possible, but a lot of the records were handwritten and very hard to read. The church death records until 1940 were written in Latin and needed to be translated. Father Chris Vasko helped on some translations. Some of the older monuments were also very hard to read and it is possible we may have misread some. It is our hope that by compiling this book, we may help others in their research.

This index with additional information and sources can also be found at the Delphos Public Library and the Fort Wayne, Indiana Allen County Library. The book is titled "St. John The Baptist Catholic Church Death & Cemetery Records 1866-1994". Please feel free to contact me with any questions or corrections at    kmccabe@woh.rr.com
